Cheers to The 2018 Pinot Noir Vintage

At Ram’s Gate Winery, our experienced team of wine professionals knows what it takes to make a great Pinot Noir. After all, it is one of our prized wines and varietals that demonstrate the diversity and bounty of Northern California.

Notoriously difficult to grow, Pinot Noir grapes are thin-skinned and grow in very tightly clustered bunches leaving limited ventilation and little natural protection from the sun, which can cause uneven or over ripening, and even rotting.

This complex grape requires more than careful nurturing, including protection from vineyard hazards—like viruses and insects—but a little luck from the uncontrollable elements Mother Nature projects onto our estate.

Late spring frosts can be devastating to our crops.

An unseasonably hot summer? The vineyard turns to jam.

When conditions and stewardship combine perfectly, an exceptional Pinot Noir emerges.

That is why we are giving three Cheers to the 2018 Pinot Noir Vintage!

Mother Nature Abides. Pinot Noir Enthusiasts Rejoice!

The allure of our 2018 Pinot Noir started with a harvest that emerged as a dream throughout California vineyards that year.

The 2018 harvest did not begin until nearly three weeks later than the previous year, thanks to the moderate spring and summer temperatures that resulted in consistent growing conditions for one of the wine world’s most delicate grapes, and cooler temperatures—but little to no frost!—that tempered their maturity.

At Ram’s Gate Winery, we were enthusiastic about both the high quality and quantity of the 2018 harvest that resulted in balanced sugar, acid, and tannin levels that made for one of our more flavorful Pinot Noirs to date.

What Should I Do with My 2018 Pinot Noir Vintage?

Whether your 2018 Pinot Noir Vintage is part of our Ram’s Gate Wine collection or another brand, it should be enjoyed with purpose. This special year can be appreciated right after it is purchased — whether you want to savor it by the glass or with tonight’s dinner — or it can be stored to enjoy and share as a real treat later.

If you are going to wait, be sure to preserve the robust flavor and balance by storing the wine on its side and:

  • Keep the wine temperature consistent, cool but not cold
  • Keep the wine away from excessive light or sunlight
  • Keep the wine away from potential humidity or vibration

Whether you are storing your 2018 Pinot Noir Vintage for a month or holding onto it for a future special occasion, be sure it is placed safely away from any disturbances, so you too can give three cheers to this exciting year and varietal when you are ready.
